About the Artist
Roger Hayden Johnson has been painting since the age of ten, when he begged his parents to buy him a set of oil paints after watching the movie "Lust for Life," in which Kirk Douglas played the role of Vincent Van Gogh. He taught himself to paint the landscapes near the small Iowa farm where he grew up. He later studied art at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and earned a master's degree in art and art history at the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Roger just completed the second of two long trips to Europe in search of subjects for his latest boat paintings. He spent a month on the northwest coast of Spain in June and another month in Bavaria, Croatia, and Italy. He discovered more harbors with wooden skiffs along the Costa da Morte (Spain) and also near Naples (Italy). Of course, it's not only about the scenery, but also about the seafood and wine!Posted October 18, 2021
We have added a new Studio page to my website to give you a peek at some of the paintings I'm currently working on, as well as recently finished pieces still in my studio. The page now features two works that appear in my ad coming out in the Dec/Jan issue of Western Art and Architecture. A few of the paintings included on the Studio page (including the two ad pieces) will be reserved to my studio for some time. You can Contact Us for more information about any of these paintings.Posted November 5, 2020
